- Coloring Page #1819 - The Moon, Our Neighbor in Space
With its closed eyes and peaceful little smile, this Moon looks as if it is sleeping quietly in space. Yet our celestial neighbor is always on the move! The Moon is Earth’s only natural satellite, orbiting our planet at an average distance of about 384,000 kilometers (239,000 miles). It completes one orbit around Earth in a little more than 27 days.
Unlike the Sun, the Moon does not produce its own light. If it shines in our sky, it is because its surface reflects some of the Sun’s light. During the month, the illuminated portion we see from Earth gradually changes: new Moon, crescent, quarter Moon, gibbous Moon and full Moon. A complete cycle of these lunar phases takes about 29 and a half days. Here is another fascinating fact: the Moon rotates on its axis at the same rate that it orbits Earth. That is why almost the same side of the Moon always faces us.
The large circles on this Printable Coloring Page are reminiscent of the many craters that cover the real lunar surface. Most were created by impacts from asteroids and other rocky objects. The Moon is actually mostly gray, but you can use pale yellow, orange or even completely imaginary colors to create your own cheerful version.
The Moon accompanies our planet Earth on its journey around the Sun. On the scale of the Solar System, it truly is our closest neighbor in space. Explore its craters, choose your colors and turn this peaceful Moon Coloring Page into a bright little world!
