- Coloring Page #224 - Hot Air Balloon
Here's a coloring page that invites you to take off... while traveling back in time! In front of you is a splendid hot air balloon, ready to lift off the ground and glide through the sky. This type of aircraft works thanks to hot air: by heating the air inside the envelope (the colorful, balloon-shaped part), it becomes lighter than the surrounding air, allowing the hot air balloon to float. The first hot air balloons appeared in the 18th century. In 1783, brothers Joseph and Étienne Montgolfier from France carried out the first manned flight. Their balloon, made of cloth and paper, was heated by a fire placed under the opening. For their very first official test, they even sent up... a sheep, a rooster, and a duck, to see how flight would affect living creatures! The basket, suspended beneath the balloon by sturdy ropes, holds the pilot and passengers. Often made of wicker, it is light yet strong, and helps cushion landings. Modern hot air balloons are mainly used for leisure, offering breathtaking views of landscapes from above. They have no engine—the pilot adjusts the altitude to find wind currents that will carry the balloon in the desired direction.
When coloring this picture, you can take inspiration from modern hot air balloons, which often display bright colors: red, blue, yellow, green... anything goes! The basket can be shaded in brown or beige to resemble traditional wicker.
By adding color to this scene, you're bringing to life the incredible invention of the Montgolfier brothers—a symbol of daring and dreams... that still carries people of all ages, high above the world, with their heads in the clouds.
